Cunard’s Beautiful Queen Anne: My Transatlantic Cruise Experience

Last year, I spoke briefly about my trip to London (including my time at Fait Maison, champagne sipping at Harrods, and an evening at the theatre, watching The Devil Wears Prada). But that was only the first half of my trip. I am so excited to discuss the second half of my trip, which was my leisurely trip back to the States. Instead of flying from Heathrow to my hometown, I did my first transatlantic cruise. I selected Cunard Cruises for my trip, and I wasn’t disappointed!

The plush robe in my stateroom

I traveled with my good friend (the same one that was on my Scotland trip) and we had a great time. We took the South Western Railway train from London to Southampton. I mentioned previously how important it is to upgrade your trains when riding around in the UK. I didn’t see an option to upgrade when I reserved our tickets, but when I return, I will be sure to select the best seat available. We had difficulty finding enough space for our luggage, but we managed to find some space before we settled into our seats. The ride was comfortable, and took a little over one hour. When we got to Southampton, we got a cab and rode directly to the port, which is a short ride away from the train station.

We took the maiden transatlantic voyage on Cunard’s newest ship, MS Queen Anne. The ship had previously operated on a different cruise route, but in January 2025, Cunard began using the Queen Anne to cross the Atlantic. and we were part of that first transatlantic group. This is their second-largest ship, right after the RMS Queen Mary 2. This beautiful vessel is less than two years old, so everything is still very new and fresh-looking. The ship’s first stop was New York City (my departure point), then continued on to traverse the entire globe over a 4-month period.

The beautiful pool deck

Onboarding was simple and uneventful. The staff was polite, efficient, and very clear in their instructions. It took very little time to get checked in and settled into our room. There was a little confusion with my friend’s luggage (it was sent to the wrong room initially), but we sorted it out quickly and got all of our things.

The restaurant where we dined most nights, Britannia

I absolutely loved the cruise overall, but there were some less than ideal moments (more about that later). For starters, I loved my stateroom. The room attendant, Delight (yes, that was her name) was lovely and took great care of us. Turn-down service included chocolates every night. The space was perfect and comfortable. My room had a balcony, but since I cruised in January, I didn’t get to enjoy it fully. Winter on the North Atlantic is too brisk for me! That being said, I looked outside of the window several times and the water was stunning and majestic.

The internet service was excellent (seriously: the best internet connection I’ve ever had on the water) and worth the investment. Unlike some ships that have ceased offering room service with the cost of your room, there is a standard room service menu with excellent options, and these items are included at no additional cost. There is also a daily tea time (gotta love British cruise lines). I looked forward to tea every afternoon.

The food was well prepared and tasty. On a scale of 0 to 10, I’d rate the food a solid 7.5. I do prefer more ethnic recipes and intense flavors (this is why I tend to really enjoy Royal Caribbean’s menus) but I certainly ate well on Cunard and enjoyed most of the dishes I tried. The room service options that I ordered were delicious and well-prepared, so on those rare occasions when I didn’t prefer the dining room options, I would simply return to the room and order something I liked instead.

Baby shrimp and cucumber brioche roll and fries that I enjoyed in my stateroom

I didn’t get to attend any of the live shows: attendance required that you reserve tickets in advance, and I never got the hang of the reservation system. That being said, I was never bored: there was music and dancing every day, not to mention a host of additional activities, like art lectures and auctions, crafting classes, language lessons, and more. There was also a spa that I used a few times (for the reason I’ll mention momentarily) and lots of other great amenities, like a library, gym, several bars, a club, and all of the other standard facilities on a cruise ship. I did visit all of the bars, the club, and the library, but I have no idea where the gym was, nor what was in it. On my vacations, I do not want to see exercise equipment.

I loved the mirrored stairwells on the Queen Anne
Stairwell art

Since I’d been on land for a number of days, I had quite a few clothes to launder. Fortunately, the Queen Anne had more than one laundry facility on board, with washing powder provided. I was delighted that I was not forced to outsource my laundering to the staff (some cruise ships no longer have public laundry facilities). But yes, I used the laundry rooms and chatted with my fellow passengers as I waited for my items to finish drying.

Anyway, I mentioned that there were some less than ideal moments. The main problem with this cruise was a storm that tossed the ship for days. This, of course, was beyond anyone’s control, and the captain and crew did an excellent job steering us through that awful storm, but the wind and water were so strong that the boat rocked fiercely, and the noise of doors slamming and clothes hangers banging against the inside of the closet made it hard to sleep. But beyond that, I experienced my very first bout of seasickness. I have typically loved cruising, and I never experienced seasickness until this trip. I had a headache and nausea that were unceasing. This bout of seasickness gave me a new level of empathy for people that experience it whenever they are on water.

Some of the dining options available via room service

I mentioned the seasickness to a lady I met during dinner, who said she went to the spa and the acupuncturist “seeded” her ears, and that gave her relief. I was so ill that I was willing to try anything, so I booked an acupuncture appointment, and Dr. Jack, the ship’s holistic doctor and acupuncturist, used principles of acupressure to “seed” my ears, taping little seeds to my ear at specific points. I don’t know much about acupressure, but seeding worked. I felt so much better, and could finally enjoy the rest of the cruise. I got some subsequent acupuncture treatments, and I felt fantastic afterward.

Once my seasickness was resolved, I got down to exploring the ship more, and enjoying the remaining days of my travel. I attended a couple of art events, dressed up for Black & White night, and listened to music at the night club all the way until my final night on the ship. And then, on the morning that I disembarked, I had a delicious breakfast and took in the sight of New York City as I prepared to bid farewell to the Queen Anne and her incredible staff.

Docked in New York, my departure point

For those curious about the pricing, the costs averaged out to $108 per day, not including the cost of gratuities, my spa treatments and internet package (all of which are completely optional additions). I found the cruise to be a great balance of cost and value: I enjoyed an elegant, comfortable trip (aside from the stormy water) with well-prepared food, charming guests, excellent and attentive staff, beautiful views, and an assortment of entertainment for less than the cost of a 3 – or higher star hotel in most cities.

Overall, I had a wonderful time on the Queen Anne, and would highly recommend that anyone interested check out the ship, as well as the rest of Cunard’s ships and cruise routes. I will cruise with them again, and I will take my family when I do!

Throwback Travel Thursdays: Cruise 2018

I know for a fact that most of us that have permanent cases of wanderlust are seriously missing our ability to travel freely. While we are all (hopefully!) doing our part to flatten the curve, it doesn’t mean that we’re not looking forward to planning our next trip once things are a little more amenable to travel. Until we can look forward, we can always look back, hence

Throwback Travel Thursdays!

I’ll try to post throwback pictures from previous travel in these posts, just to keep things light and fun, and to remind us: we’ll be able to resume our lives soon. Just hang on, friends!

I’ll be sharing some photos from the cruise I took in 2018. I’ll also add links to my cruises posts here. Enjoy!

Cruise 2018: Ports of Call

Happy Monday friends! If you reside anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic region, you may be digging yourself out of the snow that fell over the weekend. Here in central Virginia, we didn’t get that much snow: we did however get a good amount of slushy rain. We are expecting some more snow and ice in the upcoming days, so stay warm and dry if you can!

With all of this cold, wintry weather, it’s only natural that I might look back on some warmer days. Specifically, I’m thinking about my last vacation to the Caribbean. If you all recall, I went on a Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbean. I posted about the ship itself, and I also wrote about the exquisite cuisine that I enjoyed on board. The ports of call for this cruise were Nassau, Bahamas; Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Costa Maya, Mexico. I’ve been to most of these ports before ( Honduras being the only exception), so I was already familiar with the locations. That being said, I still enjoyed being somewhere warm and sunny for a change.

I don’t have much to say about the locations: because I only spent a few hours at each port of call, it’s hard to distinguish between them. As a result, this post will be mostly pictures. I always get so excited to see the beauty of the Caribbean. The crystal clear water, the striking buildings, the unrelenting sunshine … There’s nothing quite like an

island vacation. Enjoy!

Hotel Review: Rodeway Inn and Suites, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Happy Sunday, friends! Here is my overdue review of the hotel that I used when I went on my cruise in October.

Prior to, and immediately after, my cruise, I stayed at the Rodeway Inn and Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport and Port Everglades Cruise Port Hotel (now that’s a mouthful!). I selected this hotel because it offered quite a few attractive amenities. Firstly, it was close to the airport and featured a free shuttle service. This service picked up and dropped off guests at both the airport and the cruise port. As someone that has paid for several shuttles to get around before boarding a cruise ship, I appreciated the complimentary service provided by the Rodeway Inn.

Screenshot 2018-12-01 at 10.34.50 PM.png

Secondly, the hotel had a complimentary breakfast for guests. The breakfast was available for several hours each day, so it serviced both the early birds as well as the slightly late risers. The offerings weren’t luxe – it was just a step up from a continental breakfast – but it was nice to get some fresh fruit, pastries and coffee before heading out for the day.

Thirdly, the hotel offered a very reasonably priced early check-in option. Since we got to Florida well in advance of the standard check-in time, it was nice to pay the small fee and get into our rooms early. Finally, the hotel had a laundry room on site, as well as a gift shop and restaurant. With so many of amenities at the hotel, I truly didn’t need to go anywhere else to get the things that I needed during my stay.

Now, here’s my review of the staff and room.

The staff was excellent! The ladies at the front desk were all friendly, professional and thorough. They made sure that we knew everything we needed to have a comfortable stay and a seamless transit to the ship and airport. If only all hotel staff would be so spectacular!

The room was clean and adequately sized. I especially liked the fact that the room did not have carpeted floors: while most hotels do an excellent job of keeping carpets clean, I’ve seen a few that made me cringe. The floors at the Rodeway Inn were spotless. The bathrooms, too, were immaculately cleaned. I breathed a deep sigh of relief when I saw how much care had gone into preparing our room.

In a nutshell, I enjoyed my stay and I will return. The convenience of a complimentary shuttle, combined with great service and a good breakfast, are fantastic reasons to return!

2019 Travel Plans: Looking Back, Looking Forward

Well, as 2018 winds down, I can comfortably say that I’m done traveling for the year. I don’t anticipate going anywhere new until next calendar year, but boy, what a fun year this has been!

map

From my trip to Kenya, to road trips to Philadelphia and North and South Carolinas, to my cruise last month, I’ve been a busy girl. And 2019 shows no signs of me slowing down!

I’m finalizing a few details on a late winter trip to San Juan, as well as a late spring/early summer trip to Paris. I was toying around with the notion of attending a very pricey and exclusive class next spring, but I’d rather spend my money on transformative or “bucket list” travel. The class can wait!

Next falls looks like it may include another family cruise and, if not, I’ll be in London for a few days to attend an event I’ve been eyeing. I’m also looking into some additional travel to the Pacific Rim: I haven’t decided on a country yet, but I feel like this region is calling me, so we’ll see where my hankering takes me.

I have to finish reviewing my cruise travel for you all, but once that’s done, I’ll be laser-focused on my 2019 plans. I’m so excited!!!

I hope you all are having a relaxing Monday and an easy transition into this post-Thanksgiving work week. Take care, and I’ll talk to you all tomorrow!

Cruise 2018: Dining on the Sea

If you all didn’t know, I love to dine out. I actually think I like eating out a bit too much, which is why I’ve cut down significantly over the past few months. That being said, I still got excited at the dining options available on my latest cruise.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The Allure of the Seas (a Royal Caribbean ship) has multiple restaurants on board, as well as several cafes, wine bars, and snack bars. My family and I dined regularly at the main dining room at American Icon Grille. This restaurant  published a luxe menu every evening, featuring various appetizers, entrees and desserts. The restaurant changed up the menus every day, so there was always something new to try. There are also a few other themed restaurants, such as Silk (Asian foods) and The Grande (American foods).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

A typical breakfast that I’d order from room service

There is also a buffet located near the pools (the Windjammer Cafe), which has a few of the food items featured in American Icon Grille but also other dishes that aren’t available in any of the dining rooms. To be honest, I had the best time dining at the Windjammer in the evenings. The buffet had a different chilled fruit soup every night which were delicious and I could literally eat every day without getting tired of them (think the world’s smoothiest, most delicious smoothies . . . yes, it was as tasty as it sounds).

Oooh, not to mention, there is a Sorrento’s pizza, which makes fresh pizza until 3 AM. Who doesn’t love pizza? And the room service has lots of delicious fresh options available all day long.

I won’t continue to talk about the foods: let’s see some pictures, shall we?

Fall Vacation Part 1 – Cruise Overview

Happy Monday, friends! Today’s post will be an abbreviated one, because I’m going to flesh out some more of the details over the next week or so.

As you all recall, I just returned from a cruise. I’ve cruised many times before: please don’t ask me to count them, because I can’t LOL! It’s something that my family enjoys doing, so I participate because I enjoy spending time with them. We have done several Caribbean cruises and this most recent cruise also took us back to the Caribbean.

cruise

This isn’t a photo from our ship, but the sunset looks so much like the ones that I saw!

We cruised with Royal Caribbean on the ship, Allure of the Seas. The ship is large, beautiful and has lot of activities for all age ranges. Believe it or not, one of my favorite things to do on the ship was get cotton candy on the boardwalk area. There are several videos you can view, if you want to see the ship and its features.

We visited Nassau, Bahamas; Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Costa Maya, Mexico. We cruised for 7 days, and we sailed out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My family has found it prudent to arrive one day prior to sailing and leave one day after arriving back, just to have a bit of a travel “cushion” in case there are any unexpected delays. So, I also have a post reviewing the hotel where we stayed coming up pretty soon.

I tried to stick with my IF eating plan but I gave up two days into my vacation! There were so many great dining options that I have to discuss those in a separate post.

I’m Back!!!

cruise

Yes, I’m back from my cruise and I have SO many photos and stories to tell! I knew I wouldn’t be able to give “real time” updates while I was on the ship (I go on the cruise to disconnect, not to maintain my regular routine!) so I made sure that I scheduled some posts for you while I was away.

I always love my time on the water, and I’m really excited to share this experience with you all. Today, however, I’m winding down and catching up on my emails and all the things that happened while I was away. I hope you all have been doing well!

Enjoy your Monday, and I’ll be back tomorrow. Adios!

Cruise Ready – How I Pack for a Seven-Day Trip

As I look ahead to my Caribbean cruise, my mind comes down to the one question that matters most of all:

What will I wear?

Now, I’ve packed for many (MANY!) trips over the years so I’m a bit of a packing pro. However, I don’t think I’ve ever written down my luggage logic. Until today.

luggage

I’m going to break down exactly what I pack for 8 days. Warning: there are some pieces that will be worn more than once. Fortunately, the ship has a laundry room, as does the hotel that I’m staying in when I return from the cruise. Also, the ship has laundry and dry cleaning service, so you can leave the washing to someone else, if you’d like.

The outfits I’m packing are as follows:

  • 2 “anytime” dresses
  • 1 formal/semi-formal dress
  • 3 tops
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 skirt or 1 pair of capris (haven’t decided which one will make the cut yet)
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 1 swimsuit
  • 2 sarongs/pareos
  • 10 sets of undergarments (bras and panties); 4 pairs of socks
  • 1 workout ensemble
  • 1 pair of sneakers
  • 1 pair of heels

It’s important to remember that I’m wearing an outfit onto the ship, so I’m not counting that ensemble in the items above. For my 1st day/boarding the ship ensemble, I’ll be wearing:

  • long pants
  • blouse
  • ballet flats
  • small scarf

I want to keep it simple, but the truth is, it’s easy to run out of things to wear when you are doing a capsule wardrobe. Just because I’m keeping it simple doesn’t mean I want to be bored when I get dressed. I also don’t want to have to wear the same exact outfit 4+ times before I get home . . .

I’ve usually consulted The Vivienne Files for help with planning my travel wardrobe. I found a cruise-specific capsule wardrobe that may be of interest to someone. While I wouldn’t wear the colors and pieces specifically included, it still provides a good visual of what kind of items would give you the most versatility when packing for a cruise.

That’s my list for now. I’m actively trying to see if I can pare it down even more. If I can, I’ll let you all know! How do you all pack for travel? Let me know in the comments below!

Upcoming Travel Plans – September and October 2018

You all may recall a few weeks ago, when I mentioned that I was planning a trip to Charlotte to visit my family. However, that trip was supposed to happen this past weekend . . . the same weekend that Florence decided to pay the Carolinas a visit. As a result, I had to cancel my plans and reschedule. It looks like I am all set to travel to Charlotte at the end of the month, which works better for my overall schedule.

However, that is going to be a small trip, and it’s not the trip that I’m most excited about (though I’m always excited to spend time with family!) No, what I’m really excited about is that I’m going on a cruise in October! I generally go on a family cruise every other year, and this is the year that we’re due for another family vacay. So we’ll be cruising to the Caribbean and spending 7 days on the water together with a few thousand strangers LOL!

cruise

I’m usually not too excited about cruises, because I’ve done a lot of them and they tend to become indistinguishable from one another. But I’m more excited about it this time for a few reasons. Firstly, we’re going to Honduras, which I’ve never been to before. I’m always more excited about visiting a new country than I am about cruising in general. Secondly, this is the first cruise I’ve been on with my favorite cousin in about 4 years (she skipped the cruise we took in 2016). Finally, there’s something so soothing about being on the water: I can really think clearly when I’m sailing. So, I know that this cruise won’t be any different: I’m looking forward to using that time to relax and think through some things.

Those are the trips I have planned for the next 6 weeks. I’ll post travel updates as the dates get nearer: there’s always so much prep involved with these things (though that part is always fun to me!).
